Art often surprises when it provides a different perspective and such is the case with this month’s Challenge Word, “Soft.” The unexpectedness of Grady Pennington’s painting might cause you to pause. “The Softness of Trees” reminds us that trees are much more than heavy limbs, sharp twigs and rough bark. We understand that Nature provides changing palettes when the same trees change during different seasons. In spring, the new sprouts are a delicate, almost neon green against dark bark. Summertime trees with darker and larger leaves, provide shade and cool with comforting sounds on gentle breezes. In autumn, the profusion of color can be awesome and in wintertime their dark starkness seems to enhance the cold. But Grady shows us what we were missing without the perspective of softness. He seems to have a flair for fresh viewpoints and he has other paintings available in the gallery to experience.
