The unusual challenge for PAPA artists this month was to paint using only black and white. Brenda Foster’s chosen subject seems especially suited for this task in her painting, “Into the Storm.” One hardly needs any color to imagine this ship tossing in the storm and the monochromatic palette seems actually to add a layer of drama. You can imagine the cold spray of the sea blown into your face by the strong winds as you brace your feet against a rolling deck. The flash of lightning brightens the scene but realistically washes any possible color away. The roar of the thunder and wind and waves could almost overwhelm your senses. If you stand looking too long, you might even feel a little bit wobbly!

As you’ve come to expect, our special challenge exhibit contains a wide spectrum of paintings sans color and you’ll be delighted by the many versions of black and white. Come by the PAPA Gallery when you’re in downtown Paducah to see this exhibit along with all the fresh new paintings in our spring show. We appreciate the opportunity to simply enjoy art with you!
