Wizened is not a commonly used word, but it was one of the first that came to mind on viewing this painting. Mark Ray has created a portrait that holds your attention and you understand this Matriarch is not just a simple old woman. Somehow he has conveyed deep strength, wisdom, determination and stillness in her demeanor. If you dare to look in her eyes, they seem to hold your attention in an attempt to communicate something. She has witnessed much in her time and will share what she’s learned but you’re left wondering whether she would deem you worthy of her lessons.
